Sally Ann Awes (Nystrom) passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024, at the age of 93, at the Hadley House in Perham, MN, surrounded by her family. She was under the care of Knute-Nelson Hospice.
Sally was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to so many who knew and loved her. Born on April 21, 1931, to Amanda (Peterson) and John Nystrom, in Warren, MN. Sally embraced life fully through her roles as a teacher, devout church member, and loving family matriarch.
She married the love of her life Carl Dennis Awes on July 2, 1955. Together they had two children. Sally dedicated many years to educating young minds as an elementary teacher at the Warren Elementary School and Perham Public Schools. Her passion for nurturing growth extended beyond the classroom, touching all areas of life, and always there when we needed her the most, offering support, wisdom and love in abundance. A devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Warren, MN and Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham, MN. Sally was deeply involved in church activities, where she volunteered regularly, contributing to her community’s spirit and cohesiveness. Up to the last month of her life, she enjoyed her Calvary Circle Bible Study group.
Her personal life was rich with the love of her family and friends and numerous hobbies. Sally found much joy in sewing, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. An avid reader of novels, Christian books, devotionals, and her Bible, Sally never missed an episode of her favorite shows, "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "Wheel of Fortune." She was also a faithful follower of the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings, rarely missing a game. She cherished socializing with friends and making new ones along the way, bringing her immense joy and lifelong bonds. In the prime of her life, she enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, Sunday road trips, bowling, spending time and entertaining at the family cabin on Big Pine Lake, her winter retirement home in McAllen, Texas, and many memorable vacations, including trips to Sweden and Norway.
Sally was a beacon of love, support, wisdom, and great conversation. She is remembered fondly as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughters, Joni Hall and Nancy Lee; grandchildren, Amanda Hall (Jeremy Schultz), Amber (Dennis) Dye, Rebekah (Shane) Hoefs, Bryan (Miranda) Haugrud, Lacey (Jordan) Palubicki, and Dane Fehrenbach; and great-grandchildren, Mason, Myah, Luke, Logan, Levi, Gavin (Alexa), Elyse, Brody, Lylah, Everett, Finn, Quinn, and Kennedy. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephew, Kaye (Jim) Beyer, Bonnie (Richard) Nagy, and John Yuergens. Sally was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dennis Awes; parents, Amanda and John; siblings, John and Grace; and grandchildren, Adam, Sophie, and Jhett.
A celebration of Sally’s life will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham on Monday, September 9, with a visitation at 10 AM, followed by a service at 11 AM, burial at the Perham City Cemetery and lunch at Calvary Church.
Sally’s legacy of love and dedication will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
