Nellie A. Kempenich, age 87, Perham, MN, died Sunday, August 5, 2007, at the Perham Memorial Nursing Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 10, 2007, beginning at 11:00 am at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Perham, with Father Joe Herzing officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 9, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, from 4:00 - 8:00 pm with a rosary at 6:30 pm and a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
Nellie Ann Statema was born March 2, 1920, in Randall, MN, the daughter of Nicholas and Catherine (Garrison) Statema. She grew up and attended school in Randall and later moved to Portland, OR, where she worked at a ship yard for the war effort. In 1946 she was united in marriage to George Kempenich in Randall and together they farmed for twelve years. Retiring from farming, they operated the Nesbit-Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Little Falls, MN, for four years. Nellie and George then moved their family to Perham where they ran the Shell Truck Stop until 1971. George died in 1995. Nellie also worked at the Colonial Supper Club in Perham. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a member of the Christian Mothers, and the VFW Auxiliary. She will be dearly missed by all her children and grandchildren.
Nellie is survived by her children, Larry (Louise) Kempenich, Perham, MN; Art (Sharon Trangsrud) Kempenich, Fergus Falls, MN; Beverly (Gordon) Johnson, Carrollton, GA; Steve (Brenda) Kempenich, Perham, MN; Mary (Alan) Schumacher, Perham, MN; Bernice (Brian) Moreau, Rush City, MN; Dennis (Carol) Kempenich, Detroit Lakes, MN; and Leo (Joy) Kempenich, St. Peter, MN; twenty seven grandchildren; twenty two great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Kate Cole, Grand Rapids, MN.
Preceding Nellie in death are her parents; husband, George; granddaughter, Jeannette; brothers, Ed, Jack, Herman, Hank, and Bud; and her sisters, Hatt and Myrt.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Henry's School, Perham, MN.
