Mary Helene Steinbach was born November 5, 1917, on a small dairy farm in Perham, MN, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Paschke) Steinbach. She was one of nine children, four of whom are still living in Minnesota. Mary left her father's farm in the 1930's to look for work. While waitressing in Fargo, ND, she met Allen "Bob" Martin. She was married to Bob in Seattle in 1941. They had one child, Paul, who lives in Seattle. Bob died in 1995. Mary was an independent, self-reliant spirit, who rode the bus everywhere in Seattle. Always on the go, never resting it seemed, in any weather. She worked her entire life, waitressing until she was 84, and only stopped because the Opera House where she worked was closed for renovations in 2001. Mary used her "retirement" to spend more time in her garden and taking care of others. She made friends everywhere and her love for children brought many into her life who now think of her as a grandmother. Her garden supplied the neighbors with vegetables and her flowerbeds made strangers stop to talk. In her thirty-seven years serving opera, symphony, and ballet goers, many became her friends and looked forward to seeing her each season. A member of two churches, St. Edward and Sacred Heart, both of Washington, Mary's faith sustained her through a long and arduous life. It gave her the spiritual strength to go on in the face of loss and hard times. Mary's attitude was to always persevere, to never give up, even in the face of a fatal illness. And when she gave advice it often was "Put the past behind you. You have so much to look forward to."

Mary is survived by her son, Paul Martin, Seattle, WA; a brother, Raymond; and three sisters, Arlene Werner, Janice Wientjes, and Delores Minten.

Preceding Mary in death are her parents; husband, Bob; brothers, Walter, Clarence, and Henry; and her dearest sister, Martha "Babe" Dulski.

Remembrances may be made in Mary's name to Catholic Seaman's Club, St. Edward or Sacred Heart Church, Seattle, WA.
