Mary Magdeline (Wientjes) Johnson was born July 13, 1919, in Butler Township near Perham, MN. She was the first of seven children born to Henry and Marie (Elbers) Wientjes. She attended grade school in Corliss Township after which she worked in Fergus Falls, MN, and Perham. While working in Fergus Falls she met the love of her life, Carl Johnson, and they were married in 1941. Carl was inducted into the Army in 1942 and was severely injured in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. Upon his return they moved to a country home in Corliss Township where Mary lovingly nursed her husband to a state of health unexpected by most. Her strong sense of commitment and determination along with many rosaries got them through very difficult times. Their daughter, Bette, was born in 1942 and son, Gene, in 1948. In 1952 they moved to Perham. Mary was one of the original women who balanced family life and an outside job (sometimes two). This was done with nary a complaint. She still found time to help at church, plant and harvest a large garden and take care of her family. Her rosary was a constant companion during her lifetime and we are witnesses to the power of that prayer for her. If love is best expressed through action, then we, her family and friends, couldn?t have been more loved.
Mary is survived by her husband, Carl, Perham, MN; daughter, Bette (David) Reeder, Perham, MN; son, Gene (Mary) Johnson, Hibbing, MN; brothers, Henry Jr. (Darlene) Wientjes, Rosemount, MN; and John (Janice) Wientjes, Perham, MN; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Anderson and Hazel Luebke, both of Perham, MN. Mary was a loving grandmother to Amy, David John (Katie), Jennifer (Dave), Scott and Jeff (Liz); step-grandmother to Jay, Jeni and Mike; and great-grandmother to Gavin, Abigail, Joseph, Nina, Quinn, Krista, Alex, Madeline, Olivia and Noah.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Della, Gertie and Ursula; and a brother, Pete.
