Lester Alvin Mattfeld, age 78, of Perham, MN, died Thursday, September 15, 2005 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND. Funeral service will be Monday, September 19, 2005, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Perham, with Reverend Terry Grzybowski officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, September 18, from 4 ? 8 pm at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, MN with a prayer service at 7 pm and also one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Lester, son of Henry and Alice (Greiff) Mattfeld, was born October 10, 1926 in Gorman Township just north of Perham, MN. In summers he and others worked at farms in Montana. He met Harriet Dalby there and they were married at Glasgow, MT on September 23, 1950. In 1952 Lester was inducted into the Army where he was trained in Cooks and Bakers School and became acting Sergeant in the mess hall at Camp Roberts, CA. He was later stationed at Fort Lewis, WA. After his discharge they moved back to Perham where he was owner of the Standard Station for several years before going to work for the Perham Oil Company whre he did mechanic work and installed pipeline milkers at area dairy farms. After almost 30 years there he went to work for himself doing lawn and garden care in the summer and wood work in the winter. He also raised a large garden and almost an acre of sweet corn. He enjoyed helping other people and was always there for those that needed him.
Lester is survived by his wife, Harriet; 4 daughters, Paulette (Cele) Ruiz, Donna, TX; Paula (Gary) Helms, Ottertail, MN; Janice (John) Pruess, Madras, OR; Betty (Jeff) Opelia, Swanville, MN; a son, Daniel (Melissa) Mattfeld, Alexandria, MN; 10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Helen Krueger, Perham, MN; Gladys (Hank) Ramus, New York Mills, MN; Ardene (Bill) Barness, Puyallup, WA; 2 brothers, George (Alice) Mattfeld, Ottertail, MN; Alvin (Margaret) Mattfeld, Perham, MN; many nieces, nephews and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Laura and Edna; a brother, Clarence; 2 granddaughters, Tiffany Wolfe and Rebecca Bylander; 1 grandson, Robert Armstrong and a brother-in-law, Warren Krueger.
