Kelly O'Brien, age 54, of Perham, MN, died Monday, January 22, 2007, at his home under the care of Hospice. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 26, 2007, at 2:00 pm in Calvary Lutheran Church, Perham, MN, with Pastor Art Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 26, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm. Burial will take place in the spring in Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
Kelly was born December 7, 1952, in Maddock, ND, the son of Gerald Leanna (Hendrickson) O'Brien. Gerald died on January 26, 1957 when Kelly was just four years old. His mother later married Jelmer "Jack" Sather, January 1, 1966. Kelly grew up in Grand Forks, ND, and graduated from Red River High School in 1970. He worked at a manufacturing plant in East Grand Forks, MN, until 1972 when he moved to Wahpeton, ND, to attend the North Dakota State School of Science.
Kelly then began working for the Blazer in north Breckenridge, MN, and eventually became the manager until 1987. He worked part-time for the railroad and in 1989 he went back to NDSCS and received his Business Management degree. He worked at the Sportsman's Lounge in Wahpeton until the spring of 2000 when he purchased a bar in Perham, MN, and called it Kelly's on Main. He owned and operated Kelly's on Main until December 31, 2004, and in the spring of 2005 he opened the Perham Dollar Store.
Kelly liked to play softball and also coached girl's softball in Breckenridge and Wahpeton. He especially enjoyed working in the bar business and serving his customers.
Kelly is survived by his loving companion, Linda Neppl, Perham, MN; and her children, Jason, Sarah, and Julia; his mother, Leanna Sather, Grand Forks, ND; a brother, Jerry (Rita) O'Brien, Blue Ridge, VA; a sister, Merrie O'Brien, Havre, MT; a stepsister, Karen Hendrickson, Fargo, ND; five nephews, and a niece.
Kelly is preceded in death by his father, Gerald; and stepfather, Jack.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations are made to Hospice of the Red River Valley in the name of Kelly O'Brien.
