Our beloved, Joshua Caughey, peacefully passed away from brain cancer on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at the age of 39.
Joshua Lauren Caughey was born March 21, 1982 in Brainerd, MN, to Steve and Jamie (Gullickson) Caughey. He grew up in Bemidji, MN where he attended Heartland Christian Academy and graduated from Bemidji High School. During this time he was an avid athlete, participating in wrestling and track and field. He was also a gifted singer and was in choir and played the tuba. He was also involved in the Timber Bay Youth Outreach Organization where he made incredible bonds and life long friends. In his short life he experienced boundless adventures and challenges. At the age of 18 he was involved in a serious work injury that took his leg below his knee, severely damaged his hands and fingers, and nearly took his life. For Josh, this was just a minor setback and he quickly adapted to life with a new approach and different perspective. He had an immense ability to overcome. There was no obstacle you could put in front of him that he could not conquer. He was incredibly talented when it came to theory and puzzles. He was an avid reader and his favorite authors were J.R.R Tolkien, C.S Lewis, and Jim Butcher. He was also a brilliant chess player and loved nothing more than to sit down and engage in a battle of the minds with friends, strangers, family, and the like. Even in the end, when the cancer had almost completely taken over, he was the reigning champion of the chess board. He was also the king of playing devil's advocate and his sense of humor was unmatched.
Family was everything to Josh and as the oldest in the family he took on and embraced his role with dedication. He enjoyed going on trips to Wyoming, Duluth, the Boundary Waters and had so many other trips planned out. His dream was to attend Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and study Theology. He was a devout Christian and valued advancing knowledge and learning. He was always teaching himself something new. If he wasn't found out picking crabapple's to turn into jelly, he was online researching how to make homemade sauerkraut and cheese.
In July of 2017, Josh "hit the lottery", as he would say, when he married his wife Audrey Huwe. He was a doting husband and loving father to their son, Otto Caughey. He was protective, fiercely loyal, loving, and a role model for many.
Preceding Josh in death were his sister, Emmy Lee; his maternal grandfather, Arland Gullickson; paternal grandfather, Kenneth Caughey; and dear family friend, Robert Vincent.
Surviving Josh are his loving wife Audrey and their son Otto Samwise; his mother Jamie Caughey; his father Steve (Kari) Caughey; sister Elizabeth Caughey and children Noah, Elune, and Ezra; brother Ethan Caughey; brother Joel Caughey; sister Erin Caughey; maternal grandmother Donna Ray; and paternal grandmother Kathryn Caughey.
