John Alfred “Lavy” Lawrenz, 86, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at his home on Devils Lake near Perham, Minnesota where he resided since 1980. John was born February 23, 1934 to Alfred and Florence (Mueller) Lawrenz in New Ulm, Minnesota, the oldest of two children. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1952 and then received his B.S. in chemistry from Mankato State.
John started out his career teaching high school math and science. After earning his master’s degree in chemistry, he went on to work for Green Giant as a food scientist. Lastly, with lifetime partner, mother and wife Alice, he owned/operated the Coast to Coast hardware store in Perham, until their retirement.
John was a loving husband and father who shared his interests with his family through the years. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hiking, biking, and bird watching. When younger he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a dedicated fan regarding all things Minnesota sports (Twins, Vikings, Wild, Timberwolves, and his favorite the Minnesota Gophers). Another passion/activity included playing percussion in big bands and performing in drum and bugle corps.
John is survived by his sons Steven (Marie) Lawrenz and David (Jolene) Lawrenz; daughter Jean (David) Larson; grandchild Maya Larson; brother Jim (Sandra) Lawrenz; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was preceded in death by his wife Alice and his parents Alfred and Florence Lawrenz.
