Joel W. Norlien, age 88, of Perham, MN, died Monday, July 30, 2007, at MeritCare, Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 2, at 2:00 pm at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, MN, with Reverend Tom Mitchell officiating. Burial will take place in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services.
Joel Wallace Norlien was born January 23, 1919, the son of Theodore and Teckla Norlien near Kensington, MN, the oldest of eight boys. On December 3, 1942, he was united in marriage to Rachel Dorothy Potter while in the US Air Force, stationed in Biloxi, MS. Together they had four children. They lived in Biloxi for three and a half years until moving near Alexandria, MN, where they farmed briefly. In 1946 they moved to the twin cities where they lived until 1956. They briefly lived in Gaylord, MN, and St. Peter, MN, before moving to Wadena, MN, for twenty years; Perham, MN, for twenty years, Rochester, MN, for seven years, and then back to Perham in 2005 after Rachel's death. Joel was a barber for over fifty years and an active member of The Gideon's for over forty years. In his spare time, Joel liked to hunt and fish.
Joel is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Kenneth) Ryckman, Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and four brothers, Fred, Emmett, James, and Walter Norlien.
Preceding Joel in death are his parents; wife, Rachel; sons, Ronald and LeRoy; daughter, Joyce; and three brothers, Carl "Paul", David "Melton", and Raliegh.
