Jerry Allen Ronning, age 65 of Dent, MN passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018 in the Good Samaritan Society, Battle Lake, MN after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 13 at Schoeneberger Funeral & Cremation Service in Perham, MN. Visitation will resume beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dent. Pastor Dan Abrahams will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Dent.
Jerry was born on June 19, 1952 in Moorhead, MN to Singval R. and Pearl Marie (DeGroat) Ronning and was the youngest of eight children. Jerry grew up and attended school in Dent and graduated from Perham High School in 1970 and Detroit Lakes Technical College in 1972. He entered the US Navy on July 21, 1972 and was honorably discharged on July 20, 1976. He was stationed in Whidbey Island, WA as an aircraft mechanic and was on the USS Kitty Hawk in active combat in May of 1974 during the Vietnam War. After Jerry’s military service, he lived in Dent where he was employed at Land O Lakes and Bongards and enjoyed working at Arvig after his retirement.
Jerry married his beloved Linda Kay Steeke on June 2, 1973 in Corliss, MN. They shared 44 amazing years together and have three wonderful children, Marie Lynn Cupkie of Pelican Rapids, MN, Matthew Allen (Jillian) Ronning of Coon Rapids, MN and Jeffrey Jerry (Whitney) Ronning of Shakopee, MN. He was blessed with three precious grandchildren, Gibson (10), Madison (5), Carson (1).
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Dent where he was treasurer for many years. Jerry had a passion for life and a love for baseball and the outdoors. He played and coached baseball and did maintenance on the field in Dent for many years and after he hung up his cleats, he continued to enjoy the game from the stands watching his boys play. After baseball, he would start planning his pheasant hunting in South Dakota then deer hunting at the shack near Sebeka. He will be remembered for his selfless love of his family, his honesty and his passion for life.
Jerry is survived by his wife; three children; three grandchildren; his siblings Veona Murphy, Audrey Nyland, Douglas Ronning and Robert Ronning; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Rudy; and his two sisters Verna Liljenquist and Marilyn Terry.
