Funeral services for James Christian Otto, age 80, of Perham, MN, will be Tuesday, June 22, 2004, beginning at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Art Johnson officiating, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham. Burial will take place in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Sauk Rapids, MN. Visitation at Schoeneberger Funeral Home will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2004. Jim was diagnosed with cancer. On Friday, June 18, 2004, he was admitted to the Perham Memorial Hospital where he died, Saturday, June 19, 2004 at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 5 days.
Jim was born to Christian and Pauline (Janssen) Otto, on October 14, 1923, in St. Cloud, MN. He was raised and attended school in Sauk Rapids, MN. After graduating from Sauk Rapids High School in 1941, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Greenland and Guam. Upon returning home, Jim attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus, majoring in Dairy Science.
In November 1947, Jim was united in marriage to Joan Christina Sand. Following their marriage the resided in Marshall, MN until 1957, where they owned and operated the Marshall Dairy Bar. They then moved to Litchfield, MN where they lived until 1959. Beginning in 1959, Jim worked as a Dairy Plant and Product Inspector for the USDA, in Dawson, MN, until 1992 when he retired. Upon retirement, Jim moved to Glenwood, MN where he resided until 1996, when he moved to Perham, MN, under the care of his son, Tom.
Jim was a member of the Perham VFW Post 4020. Throughout his years, he enjoyed playing and listening to Old Time Music, rebuilding boats and motors and refurbishing Volkswagons. He also enjoyed lively discussions regarding the Dairy Industry whenever someone was ready to chat or listen.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his sons, Tom Otto and his family, Marlette, Emma and Sydney, of Perham, MN, Rick Otto and Pam, Michelle, Elizabeth and Benjamin, of Owatonna, MN, Robert Otto, of Omaha, NE; four daughters, Dr. Lois Tack, of Downers Grove, IL and son, Jesse, of Davis CA, Janice Bechdolt and sons, Alexander and Fritzgerald, of Citrus Springs, FL, Patrice Melom, and children, Sheila, Lucas, Will and Jackson, of St. Cloud, MN, Donna and husband Tom O?Connor, and children, Michael, Anna and Adam, of Maple Grove, MN; grandchildren, Christian, Brita, Kritina, and Sarah Melom, of Hopkins, MN; son-in-law, Randy McKinnis and wife, Wendy, of Minneapolis, MN; wife, Joan Otto, of New Munich, MN; sister, Betty Sand, of Waite Park, MN and brother, Louis Otto, of Marshall, MN.
Preceding Jim in death are his parents; siblings, Sister Paschal (Dorothy Otto), Norbert Otto, Raymond Otto and his daughter Doris Otto McKinnis.
