Jim died at MeritCare Health Systems, Fargo, ND, Monday, November 8, 2004.
Jim was born May 7, 1927, in St. Paul, MN, the son of Hartvig and Kathryn (Tangman) Holmberg. Having spent a short time together, James lost both his parents before he was 10 years old. With the support of various friends and family and his remarkable personal strength, James had the groundwork to leave Minnesota and travel the country while he was in his teens, having spent time in all states but 3 (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont), performing various jobs, and experiencing life, James came back to Minnesota in 1954. He began working at Champion Packages (Old Rap in Wax), a job he obtained during a phone interview while he was in Billings, Montana. In 1955, James met his beautiful wife, Marrian Meyer, at a cafAsh in St. Paul, and they wed April 12, 1955. James and Marrian chose their first adopted son, James, Jr., in June of 1968 and chose their second adopted son, Edward, in September 1970. In 1972, James began work for International Paper Company in Arden Hills, MN, where he worked until his retirement in 1987. The following year, James and Marrian settled in Perham, MN, a place they cherish due to the numerous years the family spent vacationing there. James loved to fish, tell stories, and help others. He was Past President of the Eagles, Sunday School teacher, member of the PTA, became President of the American Institute of Plant Engineers, with an 8th grade education and 130 credits toward his engineers degree. He was a good husband and father who enjoyed telling jokes and story telling. He will be missed by his family and many, many friends.
Surviving Jim is his wife, Marrian, of Perham, MN; sons, James, Jr., and Edward, daughters, Stephanie Welles, of Illinois, Kathryn Callahan, of Washington, and Linda Swart, of Washington ; five grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one sister, Anna Peterson, of Hastings, MN .
