Jacob "Jake" Norman Wolford, age 88, Perham, MN, formerly of Dent, MN, died Friday, December 16, 2005 at his home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at 11:00 am at Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham with Reverend Del Stohs, Greg Wolford and Robin Lundquist officiating. Internment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dent. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Jake was born March 24, 1917 in Willimasport, MD, one of thirteen children, to Jacob and Ida (Lindsey) Wolford. He attended school in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Pine River, MN. Jake farmed in Pine River for a time and then moved back to Maryland and worked as a riveter on airplanes. He moved again to Minnesota and farmed near Sebeka. He married Lillian Schoon on September 17, 1939 in Pequot Lakes, MN. They moved to Dent, MN in 1955 where Jake managed the Dent Feed Store. He then started working at the Dent school in the early 1960's as a custodian and bus driver. He founded the Babe Ruth Baseball in Dent and in recognition of his many years of coaching and driving the teams, they named the baseball field after him. Jake also loved reading, fishing, playing cards, gardening and bird watching.
Jake is survived by a son, Ron (Ann) Wolford, Henderson, AR; two daughters, Carolyn Wolford, Shoreview, MN; and Marolyn Schmidt, Abilene, TX.
Jake is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian, May 16, 2002; one son, Donnie Wolford; and twelve brothers and sisters.
