Harriet W. Kohel, age 91, of Frazee, MN, formerly Grand Rapids, MN, died Sunday, March 27, 2011, at the Frazee Care Center under the care of their staff and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Harriet was born September 2, 1919, in Devils Lake, ND, the daughter of Charles and Hilma Winnegge. She graduated from Devils Lake High School and Minot State Teachera�(TM)s College. Harriet taught for three years prior to moving to Tacoma, WA, where she was a private cook. During WWII she was employed as a mechanic/welder for Todd Shipping Company. After the war, Harriet returned to Devils Lake and met her future husband, Jim Kohel of Grafton, ND, while working at her familya�(TM)s restaurant. They were united in marriage on October 19, 1946. After the birth of their daughter, Nancy, they moved to Grand Rapids, MN, where Harriet worked at The Itasca Nursing Home as the Activities Director.
Harriet loved life and was passionate about her family and friends. She lived by her parenta�(TM)s words: to value family and friends, learn new things, work hard for what you want, set a good example and be independent. In her free time Harriet enjoyed being with family, quilting, gardening, working puzzles and traveling around the world.
Harriet is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Jim) Brandborg; four grandchildren, Kelly, Amy, Sandy (Allen) and Mike (Rebecca); four great grandchildren, Andrew, Christopher, Johnathon and Taylor and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Preceding Harriet in death are her parents, Charles and Hilma; husband, Jim; and siblings, Carl, Bernice, Earl and Muriel.
Harrieta�(TM)s favorite color was bright red so in celebration of her life the family asks, those who are willing, to please wear something red to her memorial service.
