Evonne Bode

April 9, 1937 — September 9, 2024

Evonne C. Bode, age 87 of Perham, died on Monday, September 9, 2024 at her home.

Evonne Carole Stender was born in the family farmhouse on April 9, 1937 in Young America, MN. She attended grade school in a one room schoolhouse. She continued her education in Young America. After graduating from high school in 1955, Evonne went to Concordia Junior College in St. Paul, MN. There she met David, and enjoyed a five-year courtship. On August 6th, 1960 they were united in marriage. From this marriage came forth four children: Timothy, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Steven. Evonne’s goal was the simple life with her husband and children. Her hobbies were following the rules of 4H for balanced meals. She liked to sew for herself and her daughters. She would knit sweaters for her children, husband, and friends.

Being a pastor’s wife (which was her dream), moved her around quite a bit. She spent time as a pastor’s wife on Vancouver Island, Canada then in North Branch, MN. Then on to Maple Grove and Bemidji, MN. At that time David was elected as president of the Minnesota North District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, and Evonne became the first lady.

Evonne was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Elsie Stender; her sister, Sandra; and brother, Loren. She will be greatly missed by her husband David; her four children, Timothy (Mary) Bode, Rebecca Bode, Elizabeth (Daniel) Esch, and Steven Bode; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

In short, Evonne’s life could be summarized by the four words on the backside of her headstone which simply says: “It’s all about- JESUS.”

Evonne’s Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 16, 2024 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Perham. Visitation will resume at 1:00 p.m. on Tues. Sept. 17, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Her burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Vergas, MN where her parents are buried. “Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep!”
