Evelyn Ida Guck, age 83, of New York Mills, MN, passed away at her home on May 7, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She is now at peace after a long battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Evelyn was born on December 19, 1928 in Floodwood, MN to Arvid and Ida (Maki) Perala. She graduated from Duluth Central High School, Duluth, MN in 1947. In 1953, Evelyn entered the Women's Army Corp (WAC), serving for nearly two years prior to her honorable discharge in January 1955. While in the service, at Fort Mason, CA, Evelyn met her future husband, Ted Guck. They were united in marriage in San Francisco, CA, on January 1, 1955. They moved back to Minnesota, and eventually settled on a hobby farm near Nowthen, MN where they raised four children and instilled in them a love for animals and country living.
Evelyn worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Minneapolis, MN, for ten years. Later she worked for the United States Postal Service in Minneapolis where she retired after 20 years of service in 1989. Following her retirement, Evelyn and Ted moved to rural New York Mills, MN, where Evelyn tended a large garden and loved to spend time with her family and friends. Evelyn enjoyed country living on the farm and fishing with her husband.
Surviving Evelyn is her husband, Ted, New York Mills, MN; children: Mark (Karri) Guck, Anoka, MN, Connie Hopper (friend, Mike Bleecker), Anoka, MN, Mike (Kathy) Guck, Mounds View, MN, and Lisa (Tim) Hanson, Elk River, MN; grandchildren: Katherine and Alexander Guck; sister, Ruth Kalland, Duluth, MN; brother, Richard (Jane) Perala, Minneapolis, MN; brothers-in-law: Julien Berntson, Duluth, MN, Jim (Rosie) Guck, Perham, MN, Herb (Joyce) Guck, Perham, MN; sister-in-law, Joan Guck, Perham, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Preceding Evelyn in death are her parents, and two sisters, Lillian Berntson and Shirley Perala.
Memorial Services for Evelyn will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in rural Perham, MN, beginning at 11:00 am on Friday, May 11, 2012. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. There will be a time of gathering for family and friends on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, MN, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Family and friends are also welcome to attend a visitation at the church one hour prior to the services.
