Ernest James "Jim" Kaatz, age 77, of Perham, MN, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Triumph Hospital, Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, at 11:00 am in St. Lawrence Catholic Church, rural Perham, with Father Arlie Sowada officiating. Burial will take place in Warsaw, ND, on May 10, 2008. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 29 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with a prayer service at 6:30 pm, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Ernest James Kaatz was born October 9, 1930, in Wahpeton, ND, the son of Ernest and Lottie (Evans) Kaatz. He graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1948 and attended Wahpeton State College of Science and graduated in 1950. Jim went on to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH, where he received his B.S. in 1953. He served in the US Army from 1954-56 and then went on to obtain an M.S. degree from the University of North Dakota in 1958. On August 17, 1957, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Lizakowski in Grand Forks, ND. In 1958 Jim was employed by Hercules, Inc. of Wilmington, Delaware. In 1968 Jim was transferred to the Chicago office and retired in 1986 as the Midwest Regional Manager. He continued working in the coatings industry as part owner of a small lacquer manufacturing firm in Schiller Park, IL, until 1993 at which time he retired and moved to the lake country in 1995.
Jim was involved in many things throughout his life. He was a member of the Beta Zeta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus and he was Member of the Year for the Ottertail Rod and Gun Club. Jim was also the Program Chairman of the Delaware Golf Association, past president of Chicago Paint Coatings Association, Inc., he served on the Industry Advisory Board of the Polymers Coatings Dept. at NDSU in Fargo, ND, and was also a volunteer fireman in Bloomingdale, IL.
Jim is survived by his wife, Lorraine, Perham, MN; three nephews, Frank Zolondek, Winter Haven, FL; Douglas (Dorothy) Krogen, Marshal, MN; and Timothy (Sheri) Krogen, Marshal, MN; a niece, Wanda (Lenny) Kupersmith, WA; cousins, Rick Frieburg, Minneapolis, MN; and Jan Frieburg, Minneapolis, MN.
Preceding Jim in death are his parents and a sister, Virginia Krogen.
