The memorial service for Emil J. Schwanke, 75, Perham, MN, will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, Perham, with Reverend Roger Parks officiating. Burial will be in the Perham Village Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church. Emil died on Thursday, November 23, 2006, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, North Dakota.
Emil John Schwanke was born the son of Emil A. and Lena (Hartung) Schwanke on February 11, 1931, near Dent, MN. There he was raised and attended country school #166. Following, he enlisted in to the United States Marine Corps and served from February 1952 until his honorable discharge in February of 1954. He moved back to the Perham area where he was united in marriage to Rosetta "Rose" Gustavson in Wadena, MN. He worked as a carpenter in St. Cloud and other cities throughout Minnesota. He then worked for Asp Construction in Fargo and in North Dakota. Emil then began working for Gene Piere in Ottertail, MN.
Emil enjoyed hunting, fishing, making birdhouses, wood carving, and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 4020 in Perham, MN.
He is survived by his wife, Rose, Perham, MN; four sons, Ronald (Vicki), Perham, MN; Stephen, Moorhead, MN; Greg, Moorhead, MN; and Richard (Carrie), Fargo, ND; a brother, Donald (Pearl) Schwanke, Fargo, ND; three sisters, Lorraine Nyberg, St. Paul, MN; Delores Welin, White Bear Lake, MN; and Betty (Harold) Miller, Dent, MN. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jonathan, Kelly, Britta, Michelle, Nicole, and Jared.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alvin and Merle.
