Funeral services for Earl Bernhardt Lehmkuhl, age 84, of Perham, MN, will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Perham, beginning at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 12, 2004, with Reverend Terry Grzybowski and Reverend Henry Buchholz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation at Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham is from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 13, 2004, as well as one hour prior to the funeral at the church.. Earl died at the Perham Memorial Nursing Home on June 9, 2004.
Earl was born September 28, 1919 in Perham, MN, the son of Edward and Emma (Ebeling) Lehmkuhl, in Perham Township. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School in Perham and graduated from Perham High School in 1937. Earl lived on the family farm where he was born until the time he went to work in Los Angeles, CA, as an ironworker. While in Los Angeles, Earl entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and attended flight school. He served in the U.S. Air Force with the 493rd Bomb Squad during World War II in China, Central Burma and India, receiving his honorable discharge on October 11, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Earl was the recipient of two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. On June 8, 1947, Earl married Evelyn Hinz at St. John?s Lutheran Church, Corliss Township, rural Perham, MN. Earl's bride wore a wedding gown created from the parachute that saved his life as he bailed out over China. Evelyn died March 16, 1983. In November 1989, Earl was united in marriage to Lila Skistad. Earl was the Co-Owner of Perham Farm Supply for many years. He was a member of the Perham Lions Club and served many years on the Board of Trustees/Elders at St. Paul's Lutheran Church as well as the Cemetery Board. Earl was a life member of the American Legion where he was Past Commander and the VFW. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and traveling.
Surviving Earl is his wife, Lila, of Eden Prairie, MN; his children, Fred (Eileen) Lehmkuhl, of Perham, MN, Debra (Randolph) Zelov, of Apex, NC , and Kevin J. Lehmkuhl, of Frazee, MN; grandchildren, Megan Lehmkuhl, and Ryan, Sophia, Ivana and Avelyn Zelov; step-grandson, Adam Lehman; brother, Edward, of Minnetonka, MN; brother-in-law, Edgar (Myrtle) Hinz, of Perham, MN, and sisters-in-law, Mary, of Mt. Home, AK and Martha, of Perham, MN; step-children and step-grandchildren.
Preceding Earl in death is his first wife, Evelyn ; his parents; grandson, Dana Lehmkuhl; brothers and sister, George, Erwin, and Eldred Lehmkuhl and Geraldine McGuire.
