David “Dave” John Paul passed away at the age of 75 on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at his home in Leavenworth, KS under hospice care. Dave was born to George and Agnes (Cichy) Paul on November 10, 1945 in Perham, MN.
Dave grew up in Perham, graduating from Perham High School in 1963. He then enlisted into the Army where he spent the next 21-plus years working in military intelligence. He retired from active duty as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 and was a Vietnam veteran. After retiring he took a job as a Civilian Intelligence Analyst for the United States Army in 1986, in 1991 he joined TRADOC at Fort Leavenworth and advanced to become the Scenario and Studies Directorate’s Senior Analyst in 2000 and was recognized throughout the intelligence community as an expert on Northeast Asia threats. After retiring full time in 2009, he spent the summers in Perham at his cabin on Little Pine Lake which he owned for 50-plus years spending time with family and friends. In his spare time, back in Kansas during the winter, he enjoyed framing art prints. He was the instructor at the Framing Shop at Fort Leavenworth for a few years teaching many others the art of framing. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan either watching the games on TV or listening to the games on his small battery-operated radio at the cabin. One of his biggest passions was being a member of Ducks Unlimited, even though he wasn’t a duck hunter, he believed in DU’s conservation mission of saving the wetlands and was a volunteer for over 20 years and was a Sponsor in Perpetuity. From 2015 to 2019 he attended DU’s National Convention with his son, from Milwaukee to Anchorage to San Antonio and Indianapolis to Hawaii, many new friends were made and lots of great memories were made, also. He was the former area chairman for the Atchison, KS DU Chapter, regional DU vice chairman for Eastern Kansas and in 2017 and 2018 was the top DU volunteer in the state of Kansas, serving as their DU state chairman. Even though he didn’t chase ducks, he loved getting out to the deer woods and chasing whitetails every fall in Kansas.
Surviving Dave is his son Tony (Benita) of Perham; three grandchildren Brittany (Darin) Johnson, Bret (Kristal), and Austin; five great-grandchildren Emma, Ethan, Evelyn, Greyson, and Summer and another great-grandson Benson due in December; his sister Judy; his wife; along with several nieces and nephews.
