Charles George Rutten, age 89, previously of New York Mills and Butler area, was received into his heavenly home on Sunday, February 26, 2006 at Lakewood Health Systems Care Center in Staples, MN. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Butler, MN, at 11:00 am with Father Joe Herzing officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 1, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, from 4:00 - 8:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm and also one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Charles was born February 3, 1917 the son of Joseph and Katherine (Dykhoff) Rutten in Butler, MN. He graduated from the four year high school course at Crosier College, Onamia, MN. He served in the Army four years, two months, in WW II in Co. H 32 Inf. 7th Division, and fought the Japanese in four battles in Attu, Kwajalien, Leyte and Okinawa. Charles earned the Bronze Star medal and said he was very lucky in not earning the Purple Heart. He married Marie Bucholz on November 26, 1946 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Perham, MN. Their marriage was blessed with nine children. He and Marie farmed in Butler until 1986 when they retired. Marie passed away in June 1987. Charles married Vera Minge at St. Henry's Church in Monticello, MN on June 28, 1991. Vera passed away in January 2002.
Throughout Charles' life, he enjoyed playing and watching sports events. People knew him to be "quite competitive." He also enjoyed reading, gardening, berry picking and spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Charles is survived by seven children, Jim (Kathy), Motley, MN; Jerry (Mary), Hawley, MN; Michael (Suzy), Northfield, MN; Richard, Perham, MN; Kathleen (Roy Mulske), Butler/Glyndon, MN; Tina (Greg) Moenkedick, Verndale, MN; and Jeff (Leanne), Tampa, FL; fourteen grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; three sisters, Rosella Boogaard, Osakis, MN; Evelyn Boogaard, Osakis, MN; and Catherine (Merlyn) Hofvedt, Plymouth, MN; one brother, Clarence (Betty), Butler, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents; both wives; brothers, Albert and Lester; son, Joseph; and daughter, Jeanine.
