Funeral services for Bernice Clara Ruther, age 75, of Perham, MN, will be Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Perham, beginning at 11:00 am, with Reverend Kevin Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, is from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, January 24, 2005, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Bernice died Thursday, January 21, 2005, at the Perham Memorial Hospital.
Bernice was a daughter of John and Mary K. (Lachowitzer) Hofmann. She was born March 31, 1929 at St. James Hospital in Perham. Bernice grew up and received her education in Perham, graduating in 1947. She attended Cosmetology School in St. Cloud, MN. Bernice married Norbert Ruther on August 16, 1949. The couple made their home in Perham until they started farming in Corliss Township, rural Perham. They owned and operated a dairy farm for 27 years. Following retirement from farming, Bernice and Norbert built a home on Devils Lake, rural Perham, where she lived until August of 2004. She then became a resident of the Perham Memorial Nursing Home.
Bernice enjoyed homemakers club, gardening, canning, cooking, crocheting, knitting and knitting club, cross-stitching, quilting, ceramics and all kinds of crafts. She also enjoyed playing games with family and friends, fishing, bowling, watching the Twins, being in the company of her dog, Gin, and making cookies for her grandchildren. She also kept herself busy attending children?s activities and her most recent joy was sending and receiving email which kept her connected to her many family and friends.
Surviving Bernice is her husband, Norbert, Perham, MN; eleven children, John (Lynn) Ruther, Perham, MN, Gene (Marcia) Ruther, Inver Grove Heights, MN, Allen (Teresa) Ruther, Dent, MN, Mark (Nelda) Ruther, Perham, MN, Daryl (Susan) Ruther, Perham, MN, Michael (Donna) Ruther, Perham, MN, Bonnie (Curt) Eide, Erhard, MN, Shirley (Ross) Weber, Ottertail, MN, Thomas (Colleen) Ruther, Perham, MN, Joan (Marlow) Priem, Carthage, MO, and Andrew (Linda) Ruther, Irving, KY; 43 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Mary) Hofmann and three sisters, Agnes (Mike) Solarz, Mary Becker and Antoinette Becker.
Preceding Bernice in death were her parents; one daughter, Liane (Bruce) Lubitz; one granddaughter, Cheryl Lubitz and one brother, James (Liane) Hofmann.
