Barbara G. Walz

Barbara Gay Walz, age 92, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2022, at home in Dilworth, MN.

Barb was born December 1, 1929 to Fred and Rose Nitz.  She was raised on a farm near Rothsay, MN.  Following her high school graduation, she obtained her teaching certificate and began teaching in one-room country schoolhouses in the Perham area, where she met her husband, Xavier (Eggs), who was driving school bus at the time for Bauck Chevrolet.  They were married August 30, 1948 at St. Stanislaus Church in Perham.  Barb taught school in and around the Perham area for 41 years, including St. Joseph’s School near Dent and finished her teaching career at Perham Elementary.  Following her retirement, she worked at local nurseries, and was a volunteer for the Perham VFW, East Otter Tail County Historical Society, and City of Perham Beautification Program.  She was also a local Master Gardener Instructor. 

Barb is survived by her children:  Mark, San Antonio, TX; Pam (Brad) Loose, Perham, MN; Tim (Kim), Brentwood, CA and Brian, Dilworth, MN; brothers: Dick (Rona) Nitz; Jim (Della) Nitz and sister-in-law Barb Nitz; five grandchildren: Bianca (Troy) Benoit; Josh and Justin Loose; Patrick and Shaun (Shannon) Walz, and seven great-grandchildren: Jackson and Maddy Benoit; Leo, Max, Kaya, Ian and Renesmee Walz, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Rose; husband, Eggs; son, Gary; and brother and sister-in-law, Derry and Pat Nitz.  Her brother, Bill (Barb) Nitz, passed away December 18, 2022.

A Celebration of Barb’s life will be held on Friday, June 9^th at 11:00 AM at Schoeneberger Funeral and Cremation Service.  Visitation will be one hour before the service, with burial at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery in Perham.  Luncheon will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Master Gardener Access Program through the University of Minnesota. All memorials will be sent to the Access Program in Barb’s name.
