Ann Hexum

April 25, 1953 — December 9, 2020

Dent, MN

Ann Kathleen (Betterman) Hexum age 67 passed away peacefully at her home on Star Lake near Dent, MN on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.

She was born April 25, 1953 in Alexandria, MN to Elroy and Leona (Froemming) Betterman.

Ann was baptized on May 24, 1953 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church of Leaf Valley, MN and after the family moved to Dent, she was confirmed at and became a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She had been a Sunday school teacher and a member of the church Ladies Aid group.

She attended grade school in Alexandria until she was ten years old when her family moved to Tenter Lake, graduating from Perham High School in 1971.

On February 25, 1978 Ann married Marvin Hexum at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dent. After their marriage they resided just outside of Dent until 1981 when they purchased their first home in Dent.  They took great pride in their home and over the years remodeled it in almost every direction. In 1996, they built a new house on Round Lake, west of Dent. Then in 2016, she helped design their dream retirement home on Star Lake. In 1983, Ann and Marv started Hexum Farm Builders, specializing in post frame building construction. Ann handled the bookkeeping among other duties for many years.

Ann loved living on the lake and took great pride in her home and her yard. She was the reason all their homes had a yard manicured to perfection, ample flower beds, and many beautiful lawn ornaments.

Throughout her life, Ann loved playing games and had a very competitive nature. In the 1970s and 1980s she played first base, third base, and pitcher on the Dent women’s softball team and until recently, she was also in both a women's and mixed doubles bowling league, even bowling a 300 game once in a tournament. For many years, she also enjoyed watching all the Dent Rambler baseball games and hanging out with all of the wives and mothers on the bleachers. Ann had also been a charter member of the Dent “cookie cutter” club.

Ann loved to travel, and many wonderful memories were created from trips out West to go camping and snowmobiling, family vacations to the Black Hills, traveling to Hawaii multiple times with both family and friends. Other memorable vacations include Mexico, two trips to Jamaica, many trips to Florida, visiting both the East and West Coast, and most recently motor home trips to Lake Havasu.

You couldn't ask for a better (or more fun) friend than Ann. Her quick wit always brought a smile to everyone's face, even those that it may have been directed at. Ann's family and friends describe her as a hard worker, a wonderful and welcoming host, incredibly talented crafter, and just a fun person to spend time with. Ann will be forever remembered for making the very best Halloween costumes, which usually won the local contests, and decorating their pontoon for the Star Lake Fourth of July boat parade, which again she typically took first place.

Ann is survived by her husband Marv; sons Tony (Veronica) Herrmann and Kerry (B.J.) Herrmann; daughters Tracy (Jeremy) Brockpahler and Kelsey (Cody) Peterson; grandchildren Tyler, Alex, Savannah, and Brian Herrmann; Chelsey Herrmann; Ava Brockpahler; Hadley and Wyatt Peterson; Robbie Cummings and Kayla Cummings; great-grandchildren Jordyn, Madyson, and Ryan Cummings; Easton Quenette; Liam Wasche and Camden Saurer; and her siblings Derald (Jodi), Bill, Tom (Rolly), Chuck (Kathy), Mike (Bette), Joe, Sandy, Ellousie, and Ray (Denise).
