Alfred Kempf

April 5, 1917 — March 26, 2018

Alfred Kempf, age 100 of New York Mills, MN died Monday, March 26, 2018 in Heritage Living and Rehab in New York Mills, MN. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ottertail, MN. Pastor Karl Weber will officiate.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Alfred Gustav Kempf was born April 5, 1917 in Otto Township, Otter Tail County, MN the son of Gustav and Emma (Kelm) Kempf. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ottertail and attended District School #160.  Alfred lived on the family home place all his life until he moved to New York Mills at the age of 97.

After he retired from farming, he worked for Larson Homes and area sales barns.  He was known to travel with area farmers to pick up cattle from one end of the state to the other.

Alfred was a member of the Ottertail Rod and Gun Club and the Perham Car Club.  He enjoyed collecting old cars and driving them in parades or getting a niece or nephew to do it for him.  In addition, he loved auction sales, finding a deal for the lucky someone in the family.  Old time music was one of his loves and he could be found on Sundays at any area afternoon dance taking a whirl around the floor.

In 2014, Alfred moved to Heritage Manor and was soon seen around town on his scooter.  Mills Lanes soon became his favorite destination for coffee and tabs, but not necessarily in that order!

Alfred was the family historian, remembering family and area history to the tiniest detail.  His memory for this information will truly be missed.

Alfred touched the lives of many people in his 100 plus years.  The family is grateful to those in Mills who watched over him plus Tender Heart Home Care and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

He is survived by many, many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Alfred in death were his parents; two brothers Ernest and Edwin; and five sisters Hattie Hadler, Adeline Koplin, Ella Born, Esther Kempf and Emma Koplin.
