Karen Marie Byer was born in Detroit Lakes, MN and grew up in Ogema, MN as the middle of five children and graduated from Waubun High School in 1962. After graduation she attended nurses training in Thief River Falls where she completed her Licensed Practical Nurses training. She spent much of her career at St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes, and at Perham Clinic. Later she joined her husband, Joe, in working at the Perham Locker Plant. She retired from working in 2008.
Karen married Joe Byer in July 1968 at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Ogema. They were married for 52 years and had two children, Greg and Jolene.
Karen was passionate about her kids and grandkids. She loved to talk about and show pictures of them to anyone she met. Karen never met a stranger and had the “gift of gab.” Karen spent much of her time volunteering for the church and embroidering dishtowels to support the mission circle. Over the years, she embroidered approximately 1,400 towels for charity. She also enjoyed painting ceramics, cross-stitching, and giving her closest friends a hard time. She loved to travel, especially when her children lived out of state. She also loved going to any event that involved one of her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her brothers Glenn and Bryan.
Karen is survived by her husband, Joe; her children, Greg (Gretchen) Byer and Jolene (Jay) Phillips; four grandchildren, Tristan and Rylan Byer and Benjamin and Harrison Phillips; her sister JoAnn (Gary) Tingelstad; and her brother Donn (Joanne) Mischke.
In lieu of flowers, Karen's family requests donations to the new St. Henry's Area School, the Led by the Light Campaign.
